The Amazing Powers of Nostradamus Michel de Nostredame, or better known as Nostradamus was born in Provence in Southern France on December 14, 1503 by the Julian calender (or December 23 by Gregorian calender). Now infamous for his often “mis”quoted book ‘Les Propheties’ (The Prophecies), Michel de Nostredame has often been credited with the gift of astrology and major world events have all been foreseen in the content of his quatrains. Originally born of Jewish descent, Nostradamus was baptised into Catholicism when Louis XII (King of France) enforced the Edict of September 26, 1501 requiring all Jews to be baptised within three months or be penalized and deported from Provence. Nostradamus’ early years remains sketchy, but scholars believe that he was initially brought up under the tutelage of his grandfather, Jean de St. Rémy. Here he learnt mathematics, languages and also “celestial science” (study of the stars). So deep was his interest in the heavenly bodies, that he was given the nickname of “the little astrologer” by his early classmates. Disheartened by his interest in astrology, Nostradamus’ father sent him to become a doctor at the reknowned University of Montpellier, which was so revered, that every year a convict was sent to them for dissection practices.
